A construction worker was killed today when he became crushed beneath the tractor-trailer that he was trying to free from the mud.

The accident happened just after 8:00 a.m. at Frederick Douglass Avenue, according to Glenn Rhoad, Berkeley County Coroner.

The Coroner declined to identify the man pending family notification. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was trying to help free a 18-wheeler hauling concrete pipes. The vehicle became stuck on the dirt road and the man was behind it, trying to hook a chain from the trailer to a bulldozer.

The driver of the 18-wheeler didn’t see him behind the trailer and put the truck in reverse, running him over, said Rhoad.

There will be no charges, the death is considered accidental.
